Starts – Qualifiers and Grand Final Day 1

Briefing

For Qualifying Rounds briefing will commence at 6.00am on the morning of the tournament.

For the Grand Final the briefing will be conducted following the Pre Fish Day at a location to be determined by BETS. Teams will be notified prior to the event weekend with full details of briefing time and location

Boats will be allocated a starting position for the Qualifying Rounds that is determined by the receipt of a fully completed and paid entry.

It is a requirement of entry that at least one team member attend the briefing.

Failure to do so will result in a starting position penalty regardless of reason for absence.

Competitors are required to pre-register at the briefing location BEFORE the 6.00am start. Late-comers may be subject to penalty after this time.

Prior to the start-time, competitors must go to the pre-arranged location to have their boats checked by a BETS official. The official will check that the live well is empty and the safety gear/lanyard meets the tournament safety requirements. Once the boat is approved, the team is given their key-tag with their start position number. BETS reserves the right to disallow unsafe boats (for either teams or fish) to compete.

After the boat has been checked and approved, teams are to position themselves according to their key-tag number in preparation for the tournament start. A BETS Official will announce the beginning of the tournament by calling out the starting numbers. Once your number is called, raise your arm to notify your position and idle past the start location until you reach the take-off zone.

Day 2 (Grand Final Only)

Day 2 start order will be a ‘chase-start’ and is determined by the placing after Day 1 results.

The boater that placed in first position after Day 1 will be allocated the first key tag and starting position, the second placed boat will have the second starting position and so on. The same start process as Day 1 will begin the second day of the tournament.

Fishing Rules

It is the responsibility of all competitors to obtain necessary team permits or licences as demanded by the waterway in the state being fished. BETS will not allow a competitor to continue in the tournament without the legal licenses and permits. All documents should be brought to the briefing and shown at pre-registration.

Teams may fish any line class with spin, baitcast, spincast or flyfishing tackle.

Trolling is not permitted – Lure and fly CASTING only. Trolling is defined as using the momentum of the boat to give the lure action. Casting along a stretch of bank under electric power is permitted if using the power to keep position. However, when altering boating position, do not leave your lines in the water. BETS Staff reserve the right to disqualify teams deemed to be purposely trolling in defiance of the spirit of BETS events.

Any speed restrictions, non-boating or non- fishing areas must be adhered to; failure to do this will result in either disqualification from the session, and or the tournament and a maximum penalty of 750 grams may be applied.

Fishing is NOT permitted within any defined non-boating or non-fishing areas. If asked to leave a private marina or oyster lease, you must do so.

Only live bream are eligible for tournament points (yellowfin, black and pikey).

Fish must be caught during the designated times and kept in the boat livewell.

No more than five bream per team are allowed to be kept at any one time. If you already have five fish and catch another, immediately release a fish. Teams caught fishing with more than the BETS bag limit will be immediately disqualified and BETS staff reserve the right to check boats live wells during competition hours.

Teams may only use one rod per angler at a time while fishing all BETS events. This includes such cases as when a lure is snagged but still attached to the rod, team member can not pick up another rod and begin casting – this would constitute using two rods.

Both team participants are to stay with each other during tournament fishing times to ensure safety and to validate co-anglers catches. Teams are not permitted to fish from outside their fishing vessels at any time during sessions, including fighting and landing fish.

BETS reserves the right to place camera persons on boats at any time during the tournament.

In the case of physical or medical emergencies, BETS officials will judge the acceptability of catches.

Any complaints regarding a breech of the rules must be addressed to the on-site Tournament Director within 24hrs of specific incidents. Penalties for rule and conduct violations may include the following:

  1. Disqualification of catch for the day
  2. Disqualification from the tournament
  3. Disqualification from future BETS events
  4. A maximum penalty of 750 grams may be applied.

Any concerns regarding clarification of rules can be discussed with BETS officials BEFORE the start of the tournament.

Code of Conduct

During fishing sessions, no mobile phones or radios should be used, except in an emergency or to communicate with BETS staff.

Boats should remain a minimum of 30metres apart while fishing.

BETS sportsmanship would dictate that care of fellow competitors is of utmost importance. If a team or boat is in distress it is expected that other competitors will assist. Remember that safety is more important than your day’s catch.

BETS will encourage Fisheries and Boating Officers to attend all BETS tournaments to police safety regulations, registration, relevant boating legislation as well as alcohol and drug laws.

Teams are not to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs while competing. Legally required blood alcohol levels must be adhered too, and BETS reserves the right to request a blood alcohol test prior to the start of competition.

It is expected that Teams shall, at all times, conduct themselves in a manner becoming a professional sportsperson. Behaviors that will reflect unfavorably on BETS, its members, representatives and sponsors will subject the team’s catch to penalty or disqualification.

Weigh-in procedure and Points Scoring

Teams will finish a session by placing the key back on the appropriate peg before the session finishes. Teams placing their key on the peg after the session finish time will incur a weight penalty. BETS officials are NOT permitted to place the key tag for teams – it must be placed by either competitor in the boat.

Tags not returned by the allotted weigh–in time will be penalised at the rate of 50 grams per minute per team. If a boat returns later than 15 minutes after weigh-in time both teams will be penalised 750 grams and all fish caught will not be weighed. It is the team’s responsibility to allow enough time to ensure the key tag is placed before the allotted time.

There will be NO exceptions to this regardless of circumstance.

Teams are requested to retrieve their boats and trailer them to the defined weigh-in area adjacent to the BETS stage, or to proceed to the on-water weigh-in site. Bream will be weighed in order of arrival. Details of the weigh-in site and times will be established during the briefing prior to the start of the event.

Each team may bring in five bream per session to the weigh-in.

Bream must be 26cm to the flattened tip of the tail to qualify for weighing.

Bream will be weighed collectively with “Big Bream” candidates weighed individually.

Note: that it is the team’s responsibility to identify these fish to the weigh master.

Dead fish, as deemed by BETS officials, will not be weighed.

Boats that start in an incorrect order will be penalized, in a decision to be made by tournament officials. Boats missing their call-up must wait until all boats have left to be started by BETS staff.

Boats can return to the weigh-in earlier than the allotted time however that is all the team in that craft can fish for the day.

Qualifying for the BETS Grand Final

The Grand Final will be a two day event involving the top twenty placed teams from the final results of the Qualifying Rounds.

Points will be awarded in order of final position for the Qualifier Rounds.

Eg:

  • 1st 100 Points
  • 2nd 99 Points
  • 3rd 98 Points
  • 4th 97 Points
  • 5th 96 Points
  • and so on.

To qualify for the BETS Grand Final a team’s best four scores from the Qualifying Rounds are taken.

Should there be a ‘drawn’ 20th Grand Final place after six rounds of the Berkley Evinrude Team Series we will be following ABT policy and thus of the drawn teams, the team with the highest points score from Round 6 will take the 20th and final place

Start order for Day 1 of the Grand Final will be determined according to the aggregate scores from the Qualifying Rounds.

Grand Final teams must have fished at least one complete round together.

A pre-fish ban from midnight 30th July 2012 to midnight 2nd August 2012 is in place for the Grand Final.

Final positions will be determined by the aggregate weight achieved over the two days.

In the event of a tie in a Qualifying Round, the prize pool for the two drawn position will be added together and shared equally. In the event of a tie in the Grand Final the team with the heaviest bag weighed across both days will gain the higher place.

The winner of the $20,000 Berkley Evinrude Grand Prize will be the team with the heaviest aggregate weight.
